http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aDWoBR2Wcs&NR=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZIhOV7-_9g&NR=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMr2V5Ge22Y&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDwkcurD3o8&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EszBfSWdAys&feature=related

Not so Glorious Return to the Court

I haven’t played badminton for about a month, and yesterday JP and I went to play some drop-in badminton at a local badminton centre. Since I haven’t played for a while, I’m not really expecting a spectacular performance and I was right. Well, I was actually doing better than I thought, and three out of the first four games we played were competitive, but JP and I lost anyways, mainly because my screw-up and lack of physical fitness. I was tired after the second game but managed to get a second wind during the fourth game, but we still lost.

The last game of the night was against a mixed doubles pair. The male opponent was pretty good, but his female companion is not as good. It was a tight game and our opponents held a slim lead and got to 19 points first, but JP and I managed to muster whatever we have left and fought back to take the game 21 to 19. The main strategy was to hit it towards the lady opponent, and also for me to stay in the front while JP control the game from the back. After the winning this game I decided that I have gotten enough exercise for the day, as my legs and right arm was sore already. So at the end of the day we ended up with a 1-4 record. Not great, but at least we got one win at the end. Now that I’m not going to school, I’ll probably play a litte more badminton. I think I can still go back to my university to play in the badminton club as I have paid for two terms.

Happy New Years to all our readers.

Incredible Forehand Grip Backhand Shots

There are many different strokes in the sport of badminton. Many of these strokes are covered as standard textbook material, but some of them are not. Many of these non-textbook skills can be seen in high-level competitions where players must use every trick they know to defeat their opponent. During a world-class badminton match, the players display many skills that we are familiar with, some skills that we are not so familiar with, and other skills that we never thought was possible to use on the court. This is one of the reasons why badminton is such a fun and addictive sport.

Last time I wrote about “The Backhand Grip Forehand Shot” after watching some world-class competition. Recently I witnessed a former Chinese national women’s team player Jiang Xuelian showing off her skills in the court, and her sublime performance has given me inspiration to write another article.

Since there are “Backhand Grip Forehand Shots”, logically there are also “Forehand Grip Backhand Shots”. As the name indicates, these shots involve a player using a forehand stroke to return shots to the player’s backhand side. The most common types of forehand grip backhand shots are tilting to the backhand side to hit overhead clears, smashes, and drops. However, I also watched Ms. Jiang using many other types of these strokes to defeat skilled male opponents. The forehand grip backhand shots used by this player are very useful and potent, and they show that Ms. Jiang is indeed a world class player.

Below is a list of uncommon forehand grip backhand shots that I’ve compiled after watching matches between various advanced-level players.

Tilt to backhand side overhead drive
This move is very useful for answering quick drives to your backhand side, and the aim is to use even more velocity to overcome the velocity of your opponent’s shot. The characteristics of this stroke is that it’s fast, powerful, and flies straight at the opponent’s chest, making this move an effective counter to fast drives to the high backhand side.

Tilt to backhand side overhead smash block
This is one of Ms. Jiang’s signature moves. This stroke is to use to return relatively flat smashes to the backhand side. The characteristics of this block are that it can react very quickly and the power of the return shot can be adjusted. It’s possible to clear to the opponent’s backcourt or drop it into an empty corner, so this stroke can be used to turn the tides and start a counterattack.

Behind the back, between the legs smash block
In world-class competitions you can sometimes see players using this stroke to return smashes. The situation for using this stroke is that the opponent’s smash is close to your body but your racket is not in front of you. In this situation you can put your racket behind your back and between your legs in an attempt to block the smash.

Behind the back waist position smash block
Another “trick shot” that’s seen in world class competitions, this stroke involves putting your arm behind the back so that the racket head is on the waist of your backhand side. One of the most famous practitioners of this move is famous Indonesian player Taufik Hidayat, and bellows are some videos of him using this amazing skill.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woSj8x3hx3k&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKZZDT5r4rY&feature=related

Near-net forehand diagonal drop on the backhand side
The signature move of famous Danish player Peter Gades, the net shot involves using a forehand stroke to return a drop shot to the backhand side. Instead of returning the shot with the backhand, you let the shuttle fall a little further and then swing backwards with a forehand stroke, thereby dropping the bird to the other corner. Here is a video of the move.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV8hk1-fdmc&feature=related

Turned-around baseline underhand drive
When the opponent clears to your backhand baseline corner, there will be times when you won’t be able to reach the optimum position for hitting the return clear. Instead of trying to hit the backhand clear, you take one more step towards the bird so that your back is facing the net. At that moment you can use a hard, underhand forehand swing to drive the shuttle back towards your opponent and catch them off guard.

Turned-around baseline underhand cross-court drop
Similar to the above technique, the only difference is that this stroke will attempt to drop the shuttle in the diagonally opposite corner near the net. My good friend Su Zhi often uses this stroke to surprise opponents and spectators alike.

Baseline backwards between the legs drive
The final trick shot technique in this article, this stroke is used when the shuttle is falling from high path towards the baseline. With your back turned towards the net, you run towards the shuttle and let it fall to your knees and then use a forehand stroke the drive the shuttle backwards through your legs and towards the opponent’s court.

As you can see from the list, forehand grip backhand shots can be separated into offensive and defensive categories. The offensive ones are more commonly used and are more likely to succeed. Using these techniques during a game requires fitness, speed, power, fast reaction, and some quick thinking. If you want to learn and master these techniques, the best way to do it is to consult professional badminton coaches and/or (former) professional players for their advice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woSj8x3hx3k&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKZZDT5r4rY&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV8hk1-fdmc&feature=related

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Another year has (almost) passed us by, and I didn’t realize that this blog became one year old about three months ago. I guess this goes to show how busy I was during my school term, but at least I posted every so often. JP has been pretty busy as well with both work and badminton. He has now gotten official coaching certification and has already recruited several students. I, on the other hand, haven’t played any badminton since the end of November, and I don’t know when I will start playing again. Well currently neither JP and I are playing any badminton these days. First of all it’s the holiday season, and second of all the snow that’s everywhere makes moving around a chore. Almost all of Canada got hit with a cold spell and our region wasn’t exempt to it. We received the highest amount of snowfall seen in 12 years, and there just aren’t enough snow plows and salt/sand trucks to clear the roads, so the best thing to do during these days is to stay home. Anyways, I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season, and thank you to all who visited this website.

Four for Four at the Badminton Club

I finally returned to the school badminton club after a three week absence. One of the absences was due to a holiday, and I had something else to do on the other day. Since I haven’t played in three weeks, I expected myself to be a little bit rusty. Attendance was down this gym night, and it may be because that the school term is about to end, which means finals are looming on the horizon and a lot of projects/assignments are due. That’s good for those who attended because less people means more time on the court for us.

I played a total of four games during the session, in which I teamed up with two different guys for two games each. I was a little rusty out of the gate, but so were the opponents in the first game. Both sides were making unforced errors, but my team managed to come out on top in the first game. The next two games were went pretty similarly. Both were tight contests but both times my side claimed the victory. I was doing okay in the games but I did hit the bird out of bounds a couple of times. This may be because I just switched back to my old racket and don’t quite know how hard I should be hitting.

I was a little tired after three games (yes, I know I’m unfit), but there was plenty of time left for a fourth game so I decided to play one more. It turned out to be a good thing as my partner and I dominated our opponents from the start. I found that the opponents’ defenses were not very strong so I just crushed every high return that came my way. The attacking strategy worked well, and in the end we overpowered our opponents to take the game in convincing fashion, 21-12.

So overall I won all four games I played that night, which marks my best performance thus far at the badminton club. This was probably because my partners were pretty decent players, and I didn’t do too badly myself. However, I’m sore all over now despite playing only four games. It’s probably because I didn’t play in three weeks. Next week is the last week of classes of us, and therefore it’ll also be the last week of badminton club gym nights for this term. I will be working in the next term, but because the job is local I think I can return to school on Fridays to take advantage of my membership.

More Victories at the Badminton Club

Last week I got my first win playing at my school’s badminton club, and I was hoping to continue my winning ways this week. I made sure I arrived at the gym early so I can play as many games as possible. I ended up playing four games, which was one more than last week, but there were still plenty of people. Looks like the supposed “attendance drop” during the mid-term crunch was just a rumour after all.

In the first game I teamed up with a guy to play against a mixed doubles pair. It was more of a warm-up game because the guy on my team was pretty good, while the opponents were too strong. My team won that game without much difficulty. The second game I teamed up with another partner against my partner from the first game and the male opponent from the first game. The game was pretty tight because my former partner was a pretty skilled player, but his partner wasn’t quite up there. Meanwhile, my partner and I are more even in terms of our skill level and we ended up winning the game, although it was pretty tight up to the first 15 points. After that point I started stopping shots at the net, and my side went on an offensive run that led to our victory.

The third game of the night was against another mixed doubles pair. I was still partnered up with the same guy from the second game, and we proved to be a pretty good combination. We dominated our opponents with our smashes and took the game without much difficulty. The last game of the night was against the same mixed doubles pair, but my partner has changed to someone else. My new partner wasn’t as skilled as my previous partner, and I was getting a little tired too. The game was a tight battle, and my side clawed to 20 points first, but our opponents tied the game at 20-20. The game went into deuce, but it ended fairly quickly when my side made some errors and dropped the game 20-22.

Overall this was a pretty good night for me. I won 3 out of 4 games played, and I got some exercise as well. The key to winning these doubles games is having a good partner. If the partner is strong than I stand a much better chance of winning. Well, that’s pretty much stating the obvious, but this obvious fact become more true than ever when I’m playing with strangers.

First Taste of Victory at Badminton Club

After missing the last two gym night due to other commitments, I returned to my school’s badminton club hoping to get my first win. I was win-less in the last two outings at the club. Many of the games were close, but my side just didn’t pull through at the end. Because of schoolwork, I thought of skipping today’s gym night, but I decided to go because I needed the exercise.

In the first game of the night, I was playing against two pretty skilled players. My partner was of average skill, and I wasn’t really warmed up, so we fell 12-21 pretty quickly.  The second game of the night was against two guys, one of which was one of the opponents from my first game. I was partnered up with a girl, who happens to be our club president if I remember correctly. It was a pretty hard-fought game from the start, but my team managed to keep a slim lead. We fought to a 17-17 tie, but after that my side took control of the game. I noticed that the other guy on the opposing team wasn’t too great at hitting clears, so I blasted shots into the back corners. The strategy worked and we pulled the 21-17 victory. After two outings and 7-8 games, I finally won my first game at the badminton club.

The last game of the day was a mixed doubles pair vs. me and a big guy. By big guy, I mean the guy was *almost* as tall as I am. I think I’m the tallest guy in the badminton club right now. Back to the game, our opponents were decent but they lacked attack power nor are they very strong with clears. That doesn’t work very well when you are playing against two six-feet-plus guys like my team, so we controlled the game and won fairly easily.

So tonight I won two out of three, which was pretty good considering I haven’t won a single game in the first two gym nights. I only managed to play three games tonight because there were a lot of people who showed up. Supposedly attendance drops during the midterm crunch, but there were still plenty of people there in the gym. Lets see if I can get a winning record in the next gym night.
