Last week I got my first win playing at my school’s badminton club, and I was hoping to continue my winning ways this week. I made sure I arrived at the gym early so I can play as many games as possible. I ended up playing four games, which was one more than last week, but there were still plenty of people. Looks like the supposed “attendance drop” during the mid-term crunch was just a rumour after all.
In the first game I teamed up with a guy to play against a mixed doubles pair. It was more of a warm-up game because the guy on my team was pretty good, while the opponents were too strong. My team won that game without much difficulty. The second game I teamed up with another partner against my partner from the first game and the male opponent from the first game. The game was pretty tight because my former partner was a pretty skilled player, but his partner wasn’t quite up there. Meanwhile, my partner and I are more even in terms of our skill level and we ended up winning the game, although it was pretty tight up to the first 15 points. After that point I started stopping shots at the net, and my side went on an offensive run that led to our victory.
The third game of the night was against another mixed doubles pair. I was still partnered up with the same guy from the second game, and we proved to be a pretty good combination. We dominated our opponents with our smashes and took the game without much difficulty. The last game of the night was against the same mixed doubles pair, but my partner has changed to someone else. My new partner wasn’t as skilled as my previous partner, and I was getting a little tired too. The game was a tight battle, and my side clawed to 20 points first, but our opponents tied the game at 20-20. The game went into deuce, but it ended fairly quickly when my side made some errors and dropped the game 20-22.
Overall this was a pretty good night for me. I won 3 out of 4 games played, and I got some exercise as well. The key to winning these doubles games is having a good partner. If the partner is strong than I stand a much better chance of winning. Well, that’s pretty much stating the obvious, but this obvious fact become more true than ever when I’m playing with strangers.
