Weak Start, Strong Finish at Sunday Badminton

Last week there was no Sunday badminton because many of the participants came down with the flu, but this week everyone has gotten better so JP and I went to play some Sunday badminton again. I haven’t played in two weeks and the rust was already starting to build. This was evident in the first game which my partner and I should have won, but ended up losing a close contest because we made too many errors. The second game was JP and I versus the guy who books the court and the son of one of JP’s buddies. Again, this was a game that we should have won, but both JP and I made tons of mistakes and we ended up losing badly, something like 9-21. We didn’t bring our A-game to that contest, and after falling behind a few points we just couldn’t clamp down and battle back. Credit must be given to our opponents though, as they were playing some of the best badminton I have seen them play.

The third and fourth games were JP and I versus some other opponents, and we won both games pretty handily. My fifth game was JP’s buddy and I versus the pair JP and I lost out to in the second game. Our opponents continued their stellar performance, but we held our own and fought to a 17-17 tie. In the two rallies afterwards, I used my front court quickness to get two putdowns to give us a 19-17 lead, and then my partner followed up with two skillful drop shots to earn us the hard-fought victory 21-17.

The last game of the day was a rematch of the second game. JP and I weren’t satisfied with our performance the last time and we were out to avenge our loss. Unlike the last time, JP and I took control from the start and never looked back. In the end we manhandled our opponents in a 21-6 blowout. Our effort was helped by the many errors our opponents made during the game, and I think they were running out of gas after playing so many close games.

Overall this was a pretty good outing. There were some fun games and I got my fair share of exercise. Hopefully I’ll play again next Sunday.

Sunday Badminton Report

A very short update this time:
I went to play badminton with JP and his buddies again today.Today there were a couple more people than last time, but the new additions aren’t very skileld players, so most of the games today were played at a leisurely pace. I played four or five games in total and won all except the last one. We had the game in control during the last game but we kind of let the opponents back in and dropped it 21-23. None of the other games were particularly entertaining or tough, which was good for me since I tweaked my back during a workout. Since I played today I probably won’t go back to the university badminton club on Mondays, since I’d rather have a little more free time on my weekdays.

Another Sunday Badminton Update

After last week’s hiatus, JP’s friend booked a court this week again so JP and I went to play badminton with them. There were a couple more people joining us today and in total there were seven players. I played six games in total and won four of them. I lost my first game because both my partner and I weren’t warmed up and were making careless mistakes. The next game I lost was the fifth game and that was when I was getting tired. I was playing quite well in the second and third game and took control from the front court. This just goes to show that I still have a long way to go in terms of my endurance and skills.

One of JP’s (former) students also showed up today. She has gotten much better than the last time I saw her play, and at least now she is capable of hitting the bird. Her strength and skills still have a long way to go though, but she’s still young so there’s plenty of time for her to improve.

Anyways, now that I played today, I probably won’t be going to my school’s badminton club tomorrow. I realize that I did pay for the membership already, but my school isn’t located close to my home or workplace, so I’ll have to use up even more time on the road.  And of course I’m pretty lazy too haha, and I’m not like JP who goes to every session available.

Return to Badminton Club

Today after work I went back to my university to play in the school badminton club. I’m currently working co-op right now, but my work place isn’t too far from my university so going back there doesn’t take too long. I actually arrived early and was surprised when the gym was empty. Turns out the session started at 5:30 but I thought it started at 5:00, so I walked a long way to find a computer to check whether if the gym night was today or not.

After confirming the session was today, I went to the gym and started playing. The first game I was paired up with a guy that I knew was quite skilled, and I thought we would beat our opponents. Unfortunately, my prediction didn’t quite come true as both of us were rusty out of the gate and fell behind quickly. There were several swat opportunities at the beginning, but I hit all of them into the net. Our opponents had us in a 19-15 stranglehold, but suddenly we sprung to life and scored five straight points to take the lead 20-19. I thought we were going to get our big come-back win, but we made some mistakes and ended up losing 20-22.

The second game was more or less the same as the first one (although my partners and opponents were different). We fell behind by a lot but managed to make it respectable, bowing out 15-21. At that point I decided to switch to another racket to see if things will get better, and surprisingly it did. The third game was an older guy (not a student) and me against a father-son team. I’ve played the father-son team before and they can be hard to deal with, but this is wasn’t one of those times. My team dominated from the start, and I was swatting birds in the front court left and right while my partner was controlling the pace with his drop shots. I think our opponents were surprised that my hits suddenly got faster and never recovered. The final score was 21-10. Our opponents weren’t too pleased with the loss so we decided to have a rematch. This game was a bit closer but my team led throughout the game and won it easily 21-14.

I ended up with a .500 record for my first day back to the club, which isn’t too bad. I probably should have won the first game but the last two games made up for it. I think changing my racket in the middle really did help, even if it’s just psychologically. I’ll try to play at the club once every week, but I can’t say for sure yet.

Sunday Badminton: Strong Start, Weak Finish

I went to play badminton with JP and his buddies again last Sunday. There were five of us when we started playing games, and another person arrived in the latter half of the session. JP was a little sore from previous badminton games and coaching sessions, so I ended up playing more games then he did. I started by playing three games in a row, first partnered with JP and then with his friend. In all three games my teams were the dominate side, and my smashes and drops were coming through and decimating our opponents. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but the truth is I was playing pretty well in the first three games.

After taking a break, JP and I teamed up against JP’s buddy and the guy who just arrived. The new arrival had fresh legs, while I was starting to get tired, so this turned into a tough game. JP and I kept it close, but I made too many errors and we dropped the game 18-21. After another break, JP and I were up again but this time against the other two opponents. We jumped out to an early lead but soon after my body started to fail me, and our opponents had us on the ropes 18-20. However, we caught a lucky break when our opponents made a service error and we tied the game 20-20. The game was then fought to a 22-22 tie before JP and I came through and won the game 24-22.

I wasn’t feeling too well after the game and that might be the reason why my performance suddenly dropped after game 3. My ability to play drops drastic when I start to feel tired because I rely a lot on my power, so once my strength is gone my smashes and drives become less effective and much more prone to hitting the net. I will start exercising on most days now since my co-op employer has a fitness room, so hopefully my stamina will get better. I still haven’t gone back to my school to play in the badminton club yet, but perhaps I’ll go next week.

盛况空前的VLTB羽毛球公开赛和大师赛

从元月16日晚开赛的VLTB(VANCOUVER LAWN TENNIS AND BADMINTON)公开赛和大师赛十分精彩和激烈。

Sunday Badminton Returns

The last two Sundays I played badminton with JP and his buddies. Two Sundays ago JP lost his beloved ArcSabre in a nasty collision with his partner’s racket. This week one of racket’s string snapped while he was coaching, and since he also didn’t bring my rackets along he also had to lend me a racket, which means he still had about three usable rackets left during last yesterday’s session haha. Anyways, there were only really four of us playing on the court yesterday. The person who booked the courts had some other business to attend to, and nobody else showed up to stay. JP’s friend did bring one of his friends along to play one game, but after that it was down to JP and me along with JP’s friend and his son.

Due to the low turn out I had to play in every single game, but I was actually doing quite well in terms of stamina. After winning the first two games easily, I did get a little winded in the third game and our opponents had us on the ropes 18-20, but JP and I caught a couple of luck breaks and won four straight points to take the game 22-20. After that game I got my second wind and actually dominated the rest of the games. I was winning because I was being really aggressive and rushing the net whenever I had the chance, and surprisingly my body was able to keep up. Playing doubles is all about being aggressive and rushing the net, since the easiest way to get a kill is by smashing from the front court. Our opponents didn’t have very strong attacks and one of them was a little inexperienced when it comes to playing doubles, so JP and I were able to keep pressing them. If their offense was more powerful then it would be a different story.

So overall I won all seven of my games yesterday. Hopefully these Sunday sessions will continue since I can get some exercise. I’m also thinking about going back to school to play in the badminton club after work, since I have already paid for the membership. We’ll see if I can motivate myself to get more exercise.

Hitting Techniques: Drawing Inspiration from Other Sports

Badminton is quite a unique sport. Even though there are similarities to sports such as tennis and ping-pong, badminton has its own set of skills such as clears, drives, half-smashes, smash blocks and net-plays that makes it a unique sport. However, a badminton player can still incorporate hitting skills from other racket sports and even non-racket sports. Using these techniques adds more variety to the game and can make you a more competitive player. Below is a list of shots that take inspirations from other sports.

Sliding Stroke Drop
In table tennis there is a sliding/slicing stroke where the players swings the paddle one way but the ball moves in different direction. The same principle can be used in badminton when the opponent clears to your backhand side. In that situation use the standard footwork to get into position to return the clear, and then swing your racket from right to left over your head in a sliding motion (assuming you are right-handed). The key is to keep your racket facing towards the net so that you like you are dropping the bird to the near corner, but in reality you are actually targeting the diagonal corner. In today’s badminton world, the members of the Chinese national team are especially skilled in using this technique.

Underhand Slice Shot
The slice shot is an often-seen technique in table-tennis. The shot is characterized by its low trajectory so that the opponent can not smash it back. In badminton you can use a similar slicing stroke when handling underhand shots. The underhand slice shot actually a pretty common shot for controlling a rally. When the opponent hit to your front corners or the middle of the sidelines, you will probably be on the defensive if you return with a lift. If you don’t lift the bird high and far enough then the opponent may get an easy kill. If instead you use underhand slice shots then the bird will just clear the net and then drop to front corners or middle sidelines, leaving no opportunity for your opponents to press on with an attack.

Tilt Downward Smash Block
The most common shot seen in high-level table tennis competitions is the long arcing shot characterized by its fast speed and big swing from the player. The trajectory of the shot is not especially low, but it drops quickly after crossing the net so a skilled player can controls where the ball is going to land. The top badminton players of world utilize a shot with a similar trajectory when returning smashes. The key to the shot is tilting the face of the racket slightly downward when you are blocking the smash. As the opponents smash to your sides in the mid and back court areas, you can use this block to turn the tides and go on the offensive.

Small-Swing Horizontal Drive
As the name indicates, this technique is s horizontal drive characterized by its small swing, but the speed of the bird is still quite fast. Whether if it be table tennis or badminton, the small-swing horizontal drive can quite the deceptive shot. One of the most famous users of the shot is Chinese badminton star Lin Dan, and below is a video of him using one of these drives to win a point.

Hook-shot Drop/Smash
In basketball, the hook shot is used mainly for its high release which makes it difficult to block. In badminton, a player can use a similar motion in order to extend their reach for an overhead shot. During the shot your body should be perpendicular to the net so that you can you use all of your height and arm length to deliver either a drop or smash. The drops and smashes produced with a hook-shot motion is usually has a down-the-line direction, and the hook-shot drops are usually pretty high quality because of the high hitting point.

Bending Shot
When it comes to bending shots, most people will think of English football (soccer) star David Beckham and his free kicks. Shots that curve in mid air are also possible in badminton. In the video below, the Malaysian doubles pair hit a down the line shot that appear to be out of bounds as it crossed the net, but to the surprise of the opponents and the umpires the bird actually bent back into the court and landed right in the back corner. Some people think that the bird was blown back in by wind inside the building, but if there were such winds present then the building would be inadequate for a badminton competition.

The so-called bending shots are characterized by the fact that they bend a change direction in mid air, and this is usually caused by a spin in the flying projectile. In badminton this implies that the landing place for the bird will be different than expected. The most common occurrences of bending shots in badminton are from fast diagonal drops from the back corners. Initially the bird flies fast and looks like a half-smash, but the trajectory bends and the bird steeply drops off after it crosses the net. Bending shots are very deceptive because of its change in direction and therefore they are a very effective technique to use in a game.

Bunt Opposite-Direction Shot
This particular skill has some similarities to the bunt used in baseball. For those who don’t know, a bunt is when the hitter taps the baseball lightly with the bat so it rolls slowly in front of the infielders.

In badminton, the high-level players use a similar shot to mislead their opponents. The key of doing an opposite direction shot is to get to the bird with enough time to spare for a fake. You swing the racket as if you are trying to hit the bird to one direction, but in reality you are moving the racket across and hitting the bird in the opposite direction with the other side of the racket. If you do it correctly then the opponent will be fooled into anticipating the wrong direction. Below are some videos of this excellent technique in action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDwkcurD3o8&feature=related

Hairpin Drop Shot
In advanced table tennis we often see player hit the ball from below the table. The analogous shot in badminton is the hairpin near-net drop shot. Advanced players can hit the bird just before it hits the ground and drop it over the net. The shot involves both slicing and carrying the bird so that it rises almost completely vertically and tumbles over the net. Here’s an example video of a hairpin drop.

Different sports have their own unique techniques, but they also share some common characteristics as well. Using techniques from different sports adds variety and fun to badminton. Event though they may be unorthodox, the skills can prove to be very useful during a game. Adding these unusual shots to your standard badminton techniques will make you a more competitive player and make the game of badminton even more enjoyable.
