Star player denies hitting coach

BADMINTON: China’s world No.1 apologizes for temper tantrum

BEIJING      Chinas world No.1 badminton player Lin Dan has denied striking his coach but apologized for throwing a temper tantrum that sparked calls for his dismissal from the Olympic team, according to state media reports.

Lin, 24, allegedly struck coach Ji xinpeng after losing his cool during a training match last week, prompting a chorus of calls to punish the temperamental star.

“I have apologized, but I never hit anyone,” Lin told Guangzhou’s Southern Metroopolis daily

Several state-run newspapers reported that Lin had hit Ji and that other players and coaches quickly intervened to stop the 2007 world champion.

Lin only apologized to Ji several days after the fracas, explaining he initially considered the incident minor. “But it was affecting the reputation of the badminton team, so I apolozed,” he said, according to the Southern Metroopolis daily.

Ji said he hoped the apology would be the final word on the incident so the team can train in peace for the Aug. 8 – 24 Beijing Olympic Games.

Lin is famous for public spats with Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia. And in the Korean Open this year, Lin rushed South Korea’s Chinese head coach Li Mao after a questionable line call and appeared poised to strike him with his racket before trainers and teammates intervened.

Lin Dan is known for emotional behaviour.
