Even though I’m studying away from home, I’ve actually been playing badminton once a week at my school’s badminton club. The badminton club plays three nights a week, but due to my schedule I only play one night. About 10-20ish people come out to play each session, and the badminton here is better than I expected. From what I’ve seen, there are 2-3 guys who are really good (much better than I am), but I haven’t had a chance to play against them in doubles so I don’t know how I’d fare against them. I played one of those guys in singles and got blanked 15-0 twice, and I’ll talk about that later. As for the other members of the club, most are competent players who can hit decent clears, but they don’t have a lot of attacking power or especially good defense. I’m not exactly a great player myself, but I do have fairly strong smashes and drives, and I usually win my doubles games at the club because of this.

Singles is a different story though. Some of the time we have access to six courts and not a lot of people show up, so I played a couple of singles games over the semester. Unlike doubles, I have a much harder time playing singles, and that’s even when playing against opponents I would probably beat in doubles. The problem is that my foot speed is too slow. I just can’t seem to move quickly enough to get to the bird in a lot of occasions. Singles is a tougher game than doubles since the player has to cover more of the court, and I’m just too used to playing doubles that my footwork can’t hold up in singles. Even though I can probably hit harder than my opponents, my lack of foot speed drags me down. The best way to improve footwork is through training, but I don’t know if I have the time and energy to do that. I should probably play more than once per week at the least if I want to improve my skills. For now though I’ll probably just stick with one a week since I’m mostly playing for fun and for the exercise.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[8

post-308","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-personal-experience
["GET
